What is Diffusion?

Diffusion is the dispersing of essential oils as a fine vapour throughout the air so they can be absorbed gently into the body through the respiratory system. The aroma can prompt the nervous system to transmit signals to the limbic system in the brain – the same part of the brain that houses emotion and memory. Many positive effects are received for the body, mind and mood throughout this process and you can completely change the atmosphere of your environment with a simple diffusion.

Why diffuse?

Many therapeutic benefits can be gained when diffused essential oil molecules are inhaled. Diffusion is such a great way to use essential oils for scenting a room, cleaning the air, boosting immunity, promoting energy, calming stress and anxious feelings, supporting the respiratory system, and calming upset stomachs. Diffusion is also a great way to let multiple people (for example, your household members) benefit from the same essential oils.

An essential oils diffuser is a tool to distribute essential oils into the air creating positive effects on the entire body. Diffusing is an effective method to address physical, mental, emotional and spiritual issues.


Emotions are often said to be the root cause of many physical illnesses. When you breath oil molecules in from the essential oil diffuser, your amygdala is activated. The amygdala is located in the brain and it manages your emotions and memories. Have you ever smelled a scent in the air and had it bring back a memory? How Long to Diffuse?
Many trained aromatherapists suggest diffusing for 30 minutes at a time.



Intermittent diffusion is much more effective, as well as being safer, than continuous diffusion. Intermittent means 30-60 minutes on, then 30-60 minutes off. This is because our body, especially our nervous system, habituates after this length of time. With continuous diffusion, while benefits do not increase, there is evidence that the body becomes stressed in various ways. However, very low levels of diffusion – so the essential oil is barely noticeable – are fine anywhere, for any length of time.

What Oils to Diffuse and How to Blend?

Great news!

You can diffuse just about any essential oil you want! You can diffuse one single essential oil or you can create a blend by mixing a selection of essential oils together.
