Essential Oils and Menopause

Becky Pope · October 19, 2022
Essential Oils and Menopause

October marks Menopause Awareness Month. We’re putting the spotlight on the support available with oils if you are going through the menopause or perimenopause.I definitely feel my hormones have changed and may have even caused my chronic state with migraine symptoms (brain fog and fatigue to name a couple).  I am still on a wellness journey myself to see and use natural ways to combat symptoms. Read more here on my migraine journey. But let's talk Menopause symptoms and how essential oils can help support you.

What are the symptoms of menopause?

Common symptoms of the menopause can include hot flushes, mood swings, vaginal dryness, loss of sex drive, fatigue and brain fog.

These are symptoms which can have an impact on your daily life but are not always talked about. We want to change this to raise awareness and share advice on what things can help.

What is the menopause or early menopause?

Menopause is the time when your periods stop due to lower hormone levels.

  • If menopause happens before age 40, it is called a premature ovarian insufficiency (POI).
  • If menopause happens between ages 40 and 45, it is called a premature or early menopause.

Ways to manage menopause symptoms

You may be able to take hormone replacement therapy (HRT) depending on what type of cancer you have. If your cancer doctor does not recommend HRT for you or you do not want to take it, there are other ways to manage menopause symptoms.

Some complementary therapies, such as controlled breathing, yoga or acupuncture, may help with hot flushes or sweats. Your GP can give you more details.
Dr Mariza Snyder is a functional practitioner, women’s hormone expert, author of multiple best-selling books and host of the hugely successful ‘Essentially You’ podcast that talks how amazing they essential oils can be.

My Favourite Oils to help support me are:

Peppermint

Peppermint oil may also reduce your discomfort when experiencing hot flashes. Add no more than two drops to a tissue. Hold the tissue up to your nose while breathing slowly.
This oil may also help relieve any cramping you may experience during this time. Although not common once menstruation has ended, it’s typical to experience menstruation-related cramping (dysmenorrhea) during perimenopause.
Some women may continue to experience cramps once menstruation has ceased completely. This may be a sign of an underlying medical condition. If you’re no longer menstruating and experiencing persistent cramping, consult your doctor.

Lavender

Lavender may help balance your hormones and soothe perineal discomfort. If the area around your perineum feels tight or otherwise uncomfortable, you may consider placing a cold compress on the area. You can add one drop of diluted lavender oil to the compress for additional relief.
It’s recommended that you only use the compress for up to 30 minutes. If you experience any stinging or burning, you should remove the compress and rinse the area with water.
Lavender can also promote feelings of relaxation and help improve the quality of your sleep. During this time, insomnia and other sleep-related problems are common. You may find it beneficial to add lavender aromatherapy to your nighttime routine.

Geranium

Geranium used as an essential oil has also been found to help menopausal women manage hormonal changes. One to two drops may be inhaled from a napkin for immediate stress relief. Geranium is also helpful for dry skin. Consider adding a few drops of the diluted oil to the water during a relaxing, hot bath. Research also suggests that this essential oil has antianxiety and antidepressant effects.
Purchasing these three Organic pure essential oils to create your Menopause super power Signature Scent gives you an amazing saving of over 20% too!
Here is a guide if you are unsure on how to use essential oils.
