Finding Calm at Christmas: Gentle Rituals to Support Stress, Sleep & Wellbeing
Gentle Rituals to Support Stress, Sleep & Wellbeing
Christmas is often painted as a time of joy, closeness, and celebration — a season filled with warmth and meaningful connection. Yet for many of us, it can also be the point in the year when we feel most stretched, overstimulated, and quietly running on empty.
The build-up alone can be a lot. Planning, shopping, travelling, social commitments, and navigating family relationships all take their toll. Before we know it, December becomes something to get through, rather than something to truly enjoy.
At B Calm, my approach has always been about keeping things simple and supportive. I don’t believe in asking you to do more or completely rework your Christmas. Instead, it’s about weaving in small, intentional moments of calm — gentle rituals that help regulate the nervous system, keep you grounded in the present, and allow you to show up with more patience, presence, and ease. Rest isn’t indulgent; it’s essential.
Plants have long been trusted companions in times of stress and transition. During the festive season, aromatics and herbs can offer natural support for emotional balance, digestion, sleep, and overall wellbeing — helping you move through this busy time feeling steadier and more supported.
Understanding Christmas Stress Through the Nervous System
Seasonal stress isn’t just something we experience in the mind — it’s felt throughout the body.
When life speeds up and demands increase, the body often stays in a heightened state of alert. Rushing from one commitment to the next, juggling expectations, or preparing for challenging conversations can keep the sympathetic nervous system — our fight-or-flight response — constantly activated. This leaves us feeling tense, wired, and unable to properly relax.
To fully experience the joy and connection that Christmas offers, we need ways to gently guide the body into a parasympathetic state — the rest, digest, and connect mode where we feel safe enough to slow down.
This is where simple, sensory practices become so valuable. Scent, warmth, breath, and rhythm work directly with the nervous system, making essential oils and mindful rituals powerful tools for restoring balance during the festive season.

Creating Intentional Time-Outs – Just Breathe
The 20-Minute Reset
When you notice tension rising — clenched jaw, tight shoulders, shallow breath — it’s time to pause.
This isn’t avoidance. It’s resourcing.
The practice:
-
Remove yourself from the situation (a walk, bathroom, car)
-
Set a timer for 20 minutes
-
Use an aromatic (inhaler, tissue, or hand application)
-
Lengthen the exhale to activate the parasympathetic nervous system
-
Notice what you’re feeling without trying to fix it
-
Return when the timer ends
Simple hand application:
Dilute 2–3 drops of Lavender or Frankincense in ½ teaspoon of carrier oil. Cup hands over your nose and breathe deeply for 2–3 minutes.
🌲 Time Out in Nature – Returning to Winter’s Rhythm
Our bodies are meant to slow down in winter — just like the trees, the soil, and the wildlife around us. Yet Christmas often asks us to do the opposite.
Whenever you can, take 20 minutes outdoors:
-
Wrap up warm
-
Keep your neck and chest well covered to support immunity
-
Walk slowly
-
Listen to the birds, the wind, the quiet
-
Touch the bark of a tree, or even hug one — grounding through physical contact with nature is deeply regulating
These small moments help remind the body that it’s safe to soften.
Slowing Down So You Can Truly Enjoy
Christmas is wonderful for connection — but rest is what allows us to enjoy it.
Try:
-
An earlier bedtime
-
A simple evening routine with scent and warmth
-
Filling your own cup before pouring into everyone else
When we slow down, we create space for genuine joy.

A Winter Reflection
I’m always drawn at this time of year to the work of Donna Ashworth, whose winter poetry beautifully reminds us that rest, stillness, and quiet are not weaknesses — they are wisdom. Winter asks us to soften, not push.
Let this season be one where you honour that invitation.
“You may think yourself lazy, or flawed. Yet your body is made of almost exactly the same elements as the stars… It is not your moment to rise. It is winter, you are wintering. And you are right on time.”
— Donna Ashworth, Wintering
Wishing you a Christmas filled with calm, connection, and moments of true rest.

🌿 Why These Oils Work – With Evidence
🧠 Essential oils and the nervous system
When inhaled, aromatic molecules from essential oils reach the brain’s limbic system — the part involved in emotion, memory, and stress responses — helping to support calm and emotional balance. NCBI
💜 Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
Research shows lavender may help reduce anxiety and improve sleep quality. It has been found to lower cortisol (the stress hormone) and support relaxation when inhaled or used around bedtime. motherhoodcommunity.com
🍊 Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis)
Studies in dental and clinical settings have shown that sweet orange aromatherapy can lower anxiety and improve mood compared with no aroma, suggesting a calming effect in stressful environments. cdn.epoch.cloud
🌿 Frankincense (Boswellia species)
Frankincense is traditionally used for grounding and mental clarity, and some research and aromatherapy guidelines highlight its supportive role in calming the nervous system and emotional balance (especially when combined with other calming oils). assets.nationbuilder.com
❄️ Peppermint (Mentha × piperita)
Peppermint isn’t just uplifting — clinical aromatherapy studies have included it for improving alertness and reducing physical tension, especially in contexts like sleep quality studies in cardiac patients when used alongside calming oils. SpringerLink
🌸 Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)
Geranium is widely recognised in aromatherapy for its mood-balancing effects and is used in blends designed to support emotional wellbeing and nervous system balance. assets.nationbuilder.com
How Aromatherapy Works
The best evidence suggests that inhaled essential oils affect the autonomic nervous system — increasing parasympathetic activity (the “rest and digest” state) and reducing stress responses — which can help with relaxation and sleep. ScienceDirect
