Christmas is often painted as a time of joy, closeness, and celebration — a season filled with warmth and meaningful connection. Yet for many of us, it can also be the point in the year when we feel most stretched, overstimulated, and quietly running on empty.

The build-up alone can be a lot. Planning, shopping, travelling, social commitments, and navigating family relationships all take their toll. Before we know it, December becomes something to get through, rather than something to truly enjoy.

At B Calm, my approach has always been about keeping things simple and supportive. I don’t believe in asking you to do more or completely rework your Christmas. Instead, it’s about weaving in small, intentional moments of calm — gentle rituals that help regulate the nervous system, keep you grounded in the present, and allow you to show up with more patience, presence, and ease. Rest isn’t indulgent; it’s essential.

Plants have long been trusted companions in times of stress and transition. During the festive season, aromatics and herbs can offer natural support for emotional balance, digestion, sleep, and overall wellbeing — helping you move through this busy time feeling steadier and more supported.

Understanding Christmas Stress Through the Nervous System

Seasonal stress isn’t just something we experience in the mind — it’s felt throughout the body.

When life speeds up and demands increase, the body often stays in a heightened state of alert. Rushing from one commitment to the next, juggling expectations, or preparing for challenging conversations can keep the sympathetic nervous system — our fight-or-flight response — constantly activated. This leaves us feeling tense, wired, and unable to properly relax.

To fully experience the joy and connection that Christmas offers, we need ways to gently guide the body into a parasympathetic state — the rest, digest, and connect mode where we feel safe enough to slow down.

This is where simple, sensory practices become so valuable. Scent, warmth, breath, and rhythm work directly with the nervous system, making essential oils and mindful rituals powerful tools for restoring balance during the festive season.

For those moments when you feel scattered, overwhelmed, or overstimulated.

  • 3 drops Sweet Orange

  • 2 drops Frankincense

  • 1 drop Lavender

This blend gently signals to the nervous system: you can slow down now. Sweet Orange uplifts mood, Lavender soothes tension, and Frankincense grounds racing thoughts.

Aromatic Baths – A Full-Body Reset

Few things calm the nervous system quite like warmth, magnesium, and scent.

Basic Aromatic Bath Formula

  • 2 cups Epsom salts

  • ¼ cup carrier oil (jojoba or sweet almond)

  • 8–12 drops essential oils

Always blend essential oils into the carrier oil first, then mix with salts before adding to running bathwater. Create Your Own Calm Set

  • 5 drops Lavender

  • 4 drops Geranium

  • 3 drops Frankincense

Herbal Tea Rituals for the Festive Season

☕ Gentle Energy & Warmth

  • 1 tsp Peppermint

  • ½ tsp Rosemary

  • ½ tsp Ginger root (fresh or dried)

Steep for 10 minutes to support circulation, digestion, and clear-headed focus.

🌿 Supporting Digestion After Meals

  • 1 tsp Peppermint

  • ½ tsp Rosemary

  • ½ tsp Ginger root

  • 1 tsp Fennel seed

A beautiful after-dinner blend to ease bloating and support digestion.

After-Dinner Digestive Massage

  • 2 tablespoons carrier oil (sweet almond, jojoba, or castor oil)

  • 3 drops Peppermint essential oil

Massage gently over the abdomen in slow, clockwise circles after meals to support digestion and ease discomfort.

Creating Intentional Time-Outs – Just Breathe

The 20-Minute Reset

When you notice tension rising — clenched jaw, tight shoulders, shallow breath — it’s time to pause.

This isn’t avoidance. It’s resourcing.

The practice:

  1. Remove yourself from the situation (a walk, bathroom, car)

  2. Set a timer for 20 minutes

  3. Use an aromatic (inhaler, tissue, or hand application)

  4. Lengthen the exhale to activate the parasympathetic nervous system

  5. Notice what you’re feeling without trying to fix it

  6. Return when the timer ends

Simple hand application:
Dilute 2–3 drops of Lavender or Frankincense in ½ teaspoon of carrier oil. Cup hands over your nose and breathe deeply for 2–3 minutes.

🌲 Time Out in Nature – Returning to Winter’s Rhythm

Our bodies are meant to slow down in winter — just like the trees, the soil, and the wildlife around us. Yet Christmas often asks us to do the opposite.

Whenever you can, take 20 minutes outdoors:

  • Wrap up warm

  • Keep your neck and chest well covered to support immunity

  • Walk slowly

  • Listen to the birds, the wind, the quiet

  • Touch the bark of a tree, or even hug one — grounding through physical contact with nature is deeply regulating

These small moments help remind the body that it’s safe to soften.

  • A simple evening routine with scent and warmth
